Vicki Mayk is a journalist, memoirist, nonfiction writer and magazine editor whose work has appeared in print and online. She edits Wilkes magazine at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and was the founding editor of college magazines at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., and Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. Her writing and magazine editing earned her awards from CASE (Council for the Advancement and Support of Education), as well as regional writing and editing awards from the Public Relations Society of America and International Association of Business Communicators.
Vicki has written more than 1,000 bylined news and feature articles as a prize-winning reporter for The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a Top 100 newspaper, and The Courier-News in Bridgewater, N.J. (Her work at the Post-Gazette appeared under the byline Vicki Jarmulowski.) Her news writing earned honors from The International Reading Association, the New Jersey state chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, the New Jersey Psychological Association, and the National Association of Real Estate Editors.
Her ability to research and write engagingly about many topics led to freelance assignments for publications as diverse as Ms. Magazine, Practical Homeowner, The New York Times and trade publications in the health care and manufacturing fields. Her memoir writing and personal essays have been published in Hippocampus Magazine, the Manifest-Station and East Meets West Writers Journal.
Public Relations Professional
Vicki’s communications career also has included directing news media relations and public relations in higher education, health care and the corporate arena. She’s promoted events and placed stories regionally and nationally, working with editors in print, electronic and online media. As a community relations director, she managed the annual holiday fundraising campaign, sponsorships and corporate social responsibility for a Top 100 newspaper.
Education and Teaching
A seasoned teacher, she’s taught memoir workshops in a hospice bereavement program, memoir, literary journalism, public relations and nonfiction workshops at colleges and at writing conferences and a seminar university freshmen about the power of story.
Vicki earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Northwestern University and a master of fine arts in creative writing with a focus on creative nonfiction from Wilkes University. In 2012, she received a scholarship to study memoir writing with Kaylie Jones at the Norman Mailer Center in Provincetown, Mass. She was a writer in residence at the Writers Colony at Dairy Hollow in Eureka Springs, Ark., in 2015.
